Is There A Standard Plug For EV Charging?

Introduction

As the annual sales of electric vehicles worldwide exceed 10 million, the construction of charging infrastructure has become the key to the development of the industry. As a "bridge" connecting vehicles and power grids, the uniformity of charging plug standards directly affects user experience and industry collaboration. At present, the global charging plug standards show regional differentiation characteristics, while China has taken the lead in achieving national standard unification, and a global standard integration revolution is brewing. ​


Global charging plug standard pattern​
The world has formed four major charging standard systems. North America is mainly based on SAE J1772 AC interface and CCS1 DC fast charging, covering local brands other than Tesla; Europe promotes Type 2 AC interface and CCS2 DC fast charging standards, becoming the mainstream choice of global car companies; Japan's CHAdeMO standard, with its 8-pin DC fast charging interface, occupied a high technical position in the early days, but has gradually declined in recent years due to power bottlenecks; Tesla Supercharger interface is a self-contained system that is only suitable for its own models. These standards have significant differences in voltage levels (220V - 1000V), communication protocols (ISO 15118, etc.), and mechanical structures, resulting in cross-border charging relying on adapter equipment.​


Development and current status of China's charging standards​
my country issued the GB/T 20234 series of standards in 2011, and established the principle of "unified interface, compatible with fast and slow charging" after revision in 2015. The current standard stipulates that the maximum AC charging is 690V/250A, and the DC charging is 1000V/400A. By adding safety mechanisms such as electronic locks and insulation monitoring, the charging equipment is compatible with 99% of domestic models. Data from 2023 shows that 98.7% of domestic public charging piles use national standard interfaces, laying the foundation for the world's largest single standard charging network.

 

Industry pain points of inconsistent standards​
For consumers, interface differences increase cross-border charging costs by 30% - 50%, and there is a risk of equipment incompatibility. A survey of a multinational automaker showed that 42% of users gave up buying non-national standard models due to inconvenience in charging. At the industrial level, automakers need to develop 3 - 5 charging interfaces for different markets, increasing R&D costs by 20%; operators need to deploy multiple types of charging piles, reducing site utilization by 40%. In addition, charging accidents caused by non-standard equipment account for as high as 18%, seriously restricting the healthy development of the industry. ​


Actions and breakthroughs in unified standards​
The 62196 standard led by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has been recognized by 32 countries, and the Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN) has promoted the CCS standard to be adopted by 28 mainstream automakers. Tesla announced the opening of the North American Supercharger network in 2023, adopting the CCS1 standard; domestic automakers such as BYD and Weilai actively adapted the European CCS2 standard when exporting their products. On the device side, Huawei and Star Charge launched a five-in-one compatible charging pile that supports mainstream interfaces such as the national standard, CCS, and CHAdeMO, and the number of vehicle models served by a single pile has increased fivefold. ​


Future trends and industrial changes​
It is expected that by 2025, the world will form a dual-standard pattern with CCS as the main standard and the national standard as the auxiliary standard. After the standard is unified, the construction cost of charging piles will be reduced by 35%, and the waiting time for users to charge will be shortened by 40%. This will accelerate the coordinated development of "car-pile-network" and promote the popularization of V2G (vehicle-network interaction) technology. Institutions predict that by 2030, the global unified standard charging equipment market will exceed US$80 billion, becoming a new round of growth engine for the electric vehicle industry.
