You may have noticed more and more plug-in electric vehicles on the road lately. Whether it is the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan LEAF, Tesla Model S or the new plug-in charging Prius, these new generation plug-in electric vehicles all use the SAE J1772 standard for connection and charging. So what does this really mean?
The official name of the SAE J1772 standard is "SAE Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice J1772, SAE Electric Vehicle Conductive Charge Coupler" (SAE Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice J1772, SAE Electric Vehicle Conductive Charge Coupler). In short, the standard provides a clear definition of how a charging station (EVSE, or Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) can connect, communicate and charge with the vehicle. In this standard, EVSE is responsible for managing the connection from the grid or home power to the electric vehicle. You can think of it as a smart socket that "handshakes" with the electric vehicle to ensure safe charging.
Although the J1772 standard is not mandatory for the sale of electric vehicles by any federal agency in the United States, it is now adopted by all passenger car manufacturers worldwide. The widespread adoption of this standard makes it easier for electric vehicle owners to access charging infrastructure, regardless of vehicle make or model.
